The tidal wave of awards shows looms on the horizon as The Academy schedules its annual Oscar nominations ceremony for tomorrow morning. The 84th Academy Awards is expected to be the first ceremony in recent memory to shake up the golden “Best Picture” category, changing the nomination allocation to an unspecified number depending on the breakdown of votes. Industry speculators have estimated that there could be as many as 10 nominees duking it out for the statuette this year, inevitably upping the ante on the competition.
But for now, it’s all about which actors will be shining tomorrow morning, and which may be left crying. While there remains plenty of possibility for upset nominations and major snubs, we’ve narrowed down which films and actors we think will be recognized in the “big three” categories when the sun rises on Hollywood tomorrow morning.

Critically acclaimed films The Descendants, Hugo, and The Artist look to be all but shoe-ins for nominations this year, with The Artist already boasting a Golden Globe under its belt and The Descendants benefitting greatly from the presence of the hunky Hollywood icon and acting connoisseur George Clooney. Meanwhile, the Web is abuzz over the box office smash Bridesmaids stepping forward from the rear with a nomination of its own, and the potentially more surprising possibility of Drive nabbing a nomination, primarily “driven” by Ryan Gosling’s strong performance in the film. The category may also see a shake-up with a surge of support for Woody Allen’s alluring romance flick Midnight in Paris, widely regarded as Allen’s most significant film in years.

• Leonardo DiCaprio (J. Edgar)
• Ryan Gosling (Drive)
• Jean Dujardin (The Artist)

This year’s “Best Actor” category is expected to be loaded with glamour, featuring the likes of hot-shots and long-time pals George Clooney and Brad Pitt, in addition to the ever-present but ever-losing Leo DiCaprio, who was last seen in the category in 2006 with his nomination for Blood Diamond. Gosling also stands a fighting chance after further surfacing on the mainstream in the past year and once again winning over critics with his atypical but impressive tough-guy acting in Drive. Unknown French contender Jean Dujardin looks to be the candidate stuck in the peripheral, vying for the top spot amongst a host of Hollywood regulars.

• Michelle Williams (My Week With Marilyn)
• Viola Davis (The Help)
• Rooney Mara (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo)
• Charlize Theron (Young Adult)

Despite The Iron Lady largely being a disappointment, critics agree that Meryl Streep’s film-saving performance of Margaret Thatcher will surely solidify at least a nomination for the 62-year-old actress. Viola Davis seems a likely contender for tearjerker film adaptation The Help, with Michelle Williams possibly stealing the spotlight in the category after portraying (and becoming the spitting-image of) beloved 1950s actress and pop culture icon Marilyn Monroe. Upset nominations stand to come from newbie Rooney Mara as well as Charlize Theron for her archetype-bending role as the troubled down-but-not-out Mavis Gary.
